TRIPLE CONSCIOUSNESS:

Black Feminism(s) in the Time of Now!

MAPP International Productions and 651 Arts in association with the Brooklyn Museum present Triple Consciousness: Black Feminism(s) in the Time of Now, a three part program: October 18; November 8; and November 15 at 2pm at the Brooklyn Museum. The series delves into the current themes and manifestations of Black female identity in mainstream media. Participants will include scholars, educators, artists, writers, activists and cultural workers that will engage the audience in a thorough investigation into the current culture of Black women. The goal of Triple Consciousness is to explore creative, visionary, and transformative frameworks that support the holistic empowerment and vitality of Black women.

 

All events begin at 2PM and are FREE with Museum admission.

BODY ROCK: THE POLITICS OF BLACK FEMALE IDENTITY ON “STAGE”

This discussion examines the ways in which black female body is objectified in public arenas, whether on the stage, in the digital sphere, or on the street.  Moderated by Artist, Hip Hop Ambassador and Activist Toni Blackman. Participants include Reverend Desiree Allen, theater director Charlotte Brathwaite, Composer and Performer Karma Mayet Johnson, and Digital and Advertising Creative Director Shannon Washington.

This “Long Table” engagement aims to examine, criticize, and reinvent a narrative around the archetype of the “diva” and black female identity. Moderated by human rights activist and artist Shani Jamila, panelists include performers April Matthis and Okwui Okpokwasili, Creative Director of Mambu Badu and studio instructor at the Brooklyn Museum Kameelah Rasheed, artist and comedian Amanda Seales, and founder of the community healing space, SouLar Bliss Adaku Utah.

Asks participants to reframe and envision a 21st Century practice of Black Feminism(s) based in creativity, abundance and collective liberation. Moderated by the series curator Ebony Noelle Golden. Participants include Tanya Fields, activist for food justice and economic development; Dr. Aimee Meredith Cox, noted scholar, dancer, and activist; Florence Noel, Consultant for the NYC Department of Education; Jamilah Lemieux, Journalist and Editor of Ebony.com; and Aiesha Turman, Founder and Director of The Black Girl Project.

ABOUT THE CURATOR
Series Curator, Ebony Noelle Golden, is known and respected for her ability to blend cultural strategy, creative innovation and community-centered design to address the most pressing quality-of-life issues including: environmental justice, youth development, women’s empowerment, education equity, and the holistic sustainability of families and neighborhoods. Working nationally, Ebony is the CEO of the cultural arts direct action group, Betty’s Daughter Arts Collaborative, LLC and the Artistic Director of The Body Ecology Performance Ensemble. She earned a B.A. in Literature and Creative Writing from Texas A & M University, an M.F.A. in Creative Writing-Poetry from American University, and an M.A. in Performance Studies from New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts.


Triple Consciousness is a part of a humanities collaboration between 651 ARTS and MAPP Productions which began in the 2013-2014 season with “From Double Consciousness to Post-Black,” a long-table conversation on Black identity as part of the MAPP International produced Sekou Sundiata Retrospective, Blink Your Eyes: Sekou Sundiata Revisted.
